27 People Dead In Fire At Bucharest Heavy Metal Concert

At least 27 people were killed and nearly 200 are injured at a Bucharest heavy metal concert, after a fire have started when fireworks were let off during a concert by a local heavy metal band GOODBYE TO GRAVITY.

The blaze broke out at around 11pm last night at the Colectiv night club, where according to witnesses between 200 and 400 youngsters had gathered for a performance by rock group Goodbye to Gravity.

This morning the nation’s president Klaus Iohannis said there were ‘indications’ that safety regulations were ignored at the club.

He said: ‘We already have indications that the legal regulations had not been respected. I hope that the authorities manage their inquiry with speed and rigour.’

More than 140 were hospitalised for burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries. Hospital sources said nine were in a critical condition. Also, the band’s singer and bassist were said to be in a serious condition, it has emerged.

Journalist Sanda Nicola, reporting from Bucharest, told Al Jazeera that the Romanian health ministry has put out a notice calling for blood donations.

“The club was packed with about 300 people inside for a rock concert with a pyrotechnic show,” she said.

“Some of those being admitted to hospital have burns all over their bodies. Most of the victims were teenagers and students.

“Paramedics say that many of the people involved were foreigners who did not speak Romanian.”
