In a new interview with Bandit Rock radio station, IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith was asked about the longevity of UFO’s “Doctor Doctor,” the song that has introduced nearly every MAIDEN concert for more than two decades. The guitarist acknowledged his fondness for the classic track but suggested that change might not be a bad thing.
“Well, I mean, I love UFO — they’re one of my favorite bands — but maybe we should change it,” Smith said. “We used to have a different one — it was an AC/DC song called ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top [If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll],’ with the bagpipes and everything. So maybe we should bring that back. I do love ‘Doctor Doctor.’”
During a Q&A segment at his spoken-word event in The Vic Theatre in Chicago, Illinois in February 2022, Bruce Dickinson was asked why IRON MAIDEN consistently uses “Doctor Doctor” as the band’s entrance music at concerts.
“It has the added advantage that everybody knows we play ‘Doctor Doctor’ before we go on stage,” he responded. “So, before the intro tape, there’s five minutes of ‘Doctor Doctor’. It’s brilliant, so people go, ‘Oh, quick.’ Stop having a piss, drink the last pint, get to your seats. ‘Doctor Doctor’ is playing. They’ll be on in a minute. And for the road crew, it’s also brilliant. It’s, like, ‘Stop m**turbating in the toilet. Wipe your ass.'”
IRON MAIDEN’s current touring cycle, “Run For Your Lives” 50th-anniversary world tour, continues through 2026 before concluding with dates in K-Arena in Yokohama. After that, the band plans to take a break from the road in 2027, marking a pause following an extensive anniversary run.
