Metal music does not stop to amaze me. The more I listen to it in a daily basis, the more I get addicted and passionate to its diversity and finesse. Great Metal music is in the details – as the devil is. As it is the music As the Sun Falls honor us with their EP “Pohjoisen Sydän.”
As I said before, with a lot of Melodic Death Metal of bands available to write a review I have to pay close attention to the details to be fair with all of the bands that come to me. As the Sun Falls brought them all to me in an EP with only four tracks. Their music is not only aggressive as it needs to be, but it also brings lots of melody that bounces with the mayhem the band create in tracks as “Talvi,” whose guitars deliver the melodic part Melodic Death Metal is known for with no shadow of doubt. Even though the Melodic Death Metal verve is bigger, I could sense some Folk Metal details in it. To be more precise, I felt a Folk Metal intent in this EP. It was the long thirteen minute “Luonto Ja Sydän“ that gave me this impression by a zither a lute and the chants in it – I cannot distinguish them very well. It seems to me that the rhythm guitars and the lead guitars tell different stories, if you know what I mean. They sound apart, but at the end of the day they sound very tight together. The song sounds a bit different from other tracks in the album. It kinds of stands out from the crowd and attract the fan immediately. One of the most beautiful chants I have heard in a while. The harsh voice that contrasts with gives more power to the melody and the song. The dark melody of the piano at the end of the song gives it some macabre feeling. Grand finale “Memoriam” is fast and cadenced with a NWOBHM guitar riff mixed with the harsh Death Metal vocals. It is the track to make us remember As the Sun Falls are a Melodic Death Metal band after all.
A great album to listen in dark and plumbeus day. It is the feeling it passes the fan.
