Bloodred – Colours Of Pain Review

Almost four years ago, I had the honor to review 2022’s Bloodred Ad Astra,” an album that made me wonder about the differences between Death Metal and Black Metal. I suppose I have learnd a little about them during those almost four years and too many reviews and bands I can count. The only thing I am sure is that the differences are on the details. Listening to “Colours of Pain” showed me that a band can be on both pages at the same time and, as a matter of fact, be somewhere else. It is possible to say each track here tells a different story.

From where I am standing after listening to it, I must say “Colours of Pain” is a multilayered album. It is interesting how our viwe of an album changes after the second hearing. Sometimes it is like it is a very different album. I guess that happens because it is the effect of our mind being opened by the music we heard before. I mean, we pay more attention to the details we thought were not there before. It is something like the details emerging in front of our eyes.

It is fair to say Bloodred built their tracks using all their influences they could. First blood “Ashes” and its multitude of guitars colors my point. Album tittle Colours of Pain gives the fan the same impression, but with more violent and aggressive guitars contrasting to the emerging haunting melody. The incredible “Mindvirus” commences with suberb blast beats from the taunting Joris Nijenhuis’ drum kit. By the way, the drumming here is something else. Tracks as “Heretics” showcases the fan how evolved Extreme Metal is nowadays with its complex and defying musical solutions as the intro of “A New Dark Age.” And to think that Bloodred are a two-man band with Ron Merz on vocals, guitars, and bass and the aforementioned Joris Nijenhuis on the drums.

I noticed a great deal of change between “Colours of Pain” and Ad Astra.” Bloodred are far more mature band now that know how to develop the music conception they believe in a more secure manner. The nightmare in the band’s mind was translated into a very exciting music with flying colors.

BloodredColours of Pain” will be released on February 13th via Massacre Records.
