A previously unheard solo album from late MASTODON guitarist Brent Hinds has come to light, thanks to a revelation from drummer Duane Trucks. Speaking in the latest issue of Metal Hammer, Trucks—who played with Hinds in the psychobilly outfit FIEND WITHOUT A FACE—shared that the guitarist had completed an entire unreleased record.
“Brent’s got an entire album that hasn’t seen the light of day,” Trucks said. “He sent me the whole album of tunes and it’s cool as s**t.”
The revelation adds a poignant layer to Hinds’ legacy, just months after his tragic death in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on August 20. He was 51.
Trucks described Hinds as a fiercely authentic artist who never compromised his vision. “You rarely meet someone with so many facets who does things in such an honest, vulnerable way,” he said. “He really f**king meant what he was playing. It was not a put-on. He wasn’t just doing this for a cheque.”
Hinds launched FIEND WITHOUT A FACE in 1998, naming the project after a cult British horror film. He joined MASTODON two years later, helping propel the Atlanta metal band to global acclaim. Their 2011 album The Hunter reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200, and the band won a Grammy in 2018 for “Sultan’s Curse.”
Despite MASTODON’s mainstream success, Hinds remained loyal to his outsider roots, returning to FIEND WITHOUT A FACE for albums in 2011 and 2017. He parted ways with MASTODON in March 2025, just five months before his passing.
Whether Hinds’ solo album will ever be released remains uncertain. But Trucks’ comments confirm what fans have long suspected: somewhere out there, Brent Hinds left behind one final, unheard chapter.
