Burial – Rejoice in Sin Review

I said many times and I’ll say it again: There’s nothing like an album that starts with a big, fat, and loud roar that album tittle and warmer “Rejoice in Sin” salutes the enthusiasts.  The press release defines the band as a “no-nonsense Black Metal trio dedicating their sound to the trvest Satanic, ice-cold, blasphemous and goat worshipping origins of the genre.” Hum, good. I totally agree with the no-nonsense.

Musicwise, “Rejoice in Sin” has a foot on modern Black Metal features as the guitars that use a lot of mesmerizing riffs and those high-pitched phrases kind of avoiding the grave ones that make the songs a lot heavier. The difference is in the cadence that accommodates a more slow tempo and some kind of grooving sound – if that is possible in terms of Black Metal. Burial love to contrast both techniques as in “Beneath the Trident” where they blend some astonishing fast as hell tempos with some more cadenced. The interesting part is that they leave to bass all the heaviness – by the way, bass lines here are out of this world. The band kind of avoids graver guitar tones maybe to avoid the musical chaos they aply to the sound. On the other hand, there are tracks as “Black Metal Cunt” where they intencionally use some dissonant chords to create some musical chaos. The essence of Black Metal is to be the controversy itself. Interestingly, in tracks as “Wretched is This Life” the band uses a more standart sonancy with two guitars what gives the song more power and punch. On the other hand, vocals try more melodic lines to contrast. It seems to me Burial trust a lot on this Black Metal controversy and dissonance. By the way, pay attention to the amazing bass lines. See how they fill in all the sonic blanks of the song.

“Rejoice in Sin” is a very intense album. It delivers what it promises. It’s ice-cold. It’s blasphemous. It’s intriguing. The Black Metal album to introduce your friends that aren’t into Black Metal.

Burial “Rejoice in Sin” will be released on November 01st via Apocalyptic Witchcraft.
