CANNABIS CORPSE Officially Calls It Quits

Cannabis Corpse

Weed-themed death metal outfit CANNABIS CORPSE has officially disbanded, the band announced via social media yesterday, October 16th. Formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2006, the group was a side project for members of MUNICIPAL WASTE and over the years also featured musicians associated with GWAR, SIX FEET UNDER, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, and more.

In their farewell message, the band wrote: “Cannabis Corpse has officially Disbanded. Thanks to those of you who came out and supported. 2006-2025.”

Known for its cannabis-inspired twist on death metal, CANNABIS CORPSE built a reputation for combining heavy riffs with humor and homage. Their name parodied veteran death metal band CANNIBAL CORPSE, and while their music was entirely original, the group often spoofed album and song titles from other death metal acts—for instance, Tube of the Resinated riffed on CANNIBAL CORPSE’s Tomb of the Mutilated.

The seeds of the band were planted in 1999 when bassist/guitarist Philip “Landphil” Hall and his brother Josh “HallHammer” Hall coined the CANNABIS CORPSE name. After an initial lineup and a brief hiatus, the brothers revived the project in 2006, recording a demo that evolved into the band’s debut album, Blunted at Birth. Signed to Richmond’s Forcefield Records—the first act on the label—the band went on to release six LPs and two EPs over nearly 20 years.

Beyond the studio, CANNABIS CORPSE even made a brief appearance in the BBC political satire film In the Loop, showcasing the band’s offbeat charm alongside their ferocious death metal sound.

With their departure from the scene, fans bid farewell to one of the most distinctive and tongue-in-cheek death metal acts of the 21st century.
