The British extreme metal band CRADLE OF FILTH is currently facing legal action initiated by two of its former members, Zoë Marie Federoff and Marek “Ashok” Šmerda. The couple, who departed the group in August 2025 under contentious circumstances, have now filed an official complaint against the band and its frontman, Dani Filth. The complaint alleges financial exploitation, a hostile working environment, and emotional mistreatment, marking a significant escalation in what has become a highly public and deeply personal dispute.

On August 24, 2025, Zoë Marie Federoff exited CRADLE OF FILTH mid-tour, citing personal reasons. Days later, Ashok announced his own departure, citing “low pay,” “high stress,” and “years of unprofessional behavior” from the band’s management. The situation intensified when Dani Filth publicly stated that Ashok had been fired, accusing the couple of making defamatory claims.

In response, Federoff and Šmerda issued a joint statement rejecting Dani’s version of events and doubling down on their accusations. They described the band’s management—led by Bradley “Dez” Fafara—as manipulative and dishonest, and claimed that Dani Filth enabled and benefited from the mistreatment.

On social media, Federoff confirmed the filing of a formal complaint, stating: “We have filed a complaint to begin formal legal proceedings. We believe, support, and stand by everything in this complaint. We encourage you to read the complaint to fully understand our position, and we have no other statement on it at this time.”

Federoff even uploaded the entire complaint, which can be accessed via Google Drive link here.

Central to the dispute is a contract that Federoff and Šmerda claim was designed to trap session musicians in exploitative terms. They allege that the contract offered a meager 25% raise—the first in seven years—while demanding exclusivity and failing to cover basic living costs. Their lawyer reportedly described it as “the most psychopathic contract a session musician could ever be handed.”

Dani Filth issued a “final statement” in which he denied all allegations of theft and exploitation, expressed regret for sharing personal details, and emphasized the band’s commitment to transparency and professionalism. He acknowledged his mother’s battle with stage 4 cancer and urged for compassion, stating: “Dragging families into this storm is a cruelty none of us should wish on another.”

Despite the turmoil, Dani affirmed that CRADLE OF FILTH would continue its tour and focus on building a stronger foundation for its musicians.
