Dragonknight – Legions Review

The press release says “a new conceptual band baptized by a bunch of seasoned Finnish metal veterans, skillfully forging a smooth and fresh rendering of the classic North European power metal style through soaring melodies, thunderous rhythms, and epic orchestration, fused with crushing riffs – an unforgettable sonic journey of legendary proportions.” The press realase doesn’t give the names of the referred musicians or which bands they belong to.

Well, after listening to“Legions” with all the due attention I agree partially with what the press release said. Ok, Dragonknight is a cool band name. “Legions” is also a worn out, but cool name for a Metal album. The cover art is worn out, but cool. Intro with instrumental medieval music inspiration also worn out, but cool. Album with grand themes and grandiose music also cool. Epic orchestration, yeah, the album is full of them. Soaring melodies, yeah, same here. “The Revelation” is a good sample of it.

As the long tittle makes the fan believe, intro “Ascendance – Through Sea and Fire” prepares the fan for what is to come. As all intros, it works as an invitation to the band’s music. My dear fan will realize Dragonknight are a band that is closely linked to the most emotional and melodic Power Metal in this sad and lonely and pathetic little planet. If my dear child of the night closes the eye while listening to “The Legions of Immortal Dragonlords” or any other song in the album, it’s possible to see a movie as Lord of the Rings or the sorts. The band here took the term cape and sword to another level. Also, it’s undeniable the professionalism of the band and the quility of its musicians. “Legions” is an album where the fan notices all the care given in each moment, in each note, in each moment. It’s an album where each detail was carefully taken care of in order to make it sound so grand. “Return to Atlantis,” for instance, showcases the band’s best power moment with a strong chorus and fierce guitars. A kind of homage to Power Metal’s best, and striking, moments.

In short that’s what Dragonknight with “Legions” is about. A Power metal very drenched in the good old times of Rhapsody is what my dear child of the night will find here. The difference is that “Legions” is much more oriented to medieval music than Rhapsody ever were. I guess all tracks have a dash of some medieval tune. I would say that “Legions” has a bigger knack for some pop features as well.

“Legions” is an album for hardcore Power Metal fans. The ones that love medieval inspirations and music drenched in Rhapsody’s music, but not only that, it’s an album to fans who love the grand and epic Metal music.

P.S.: The band members uses masks to hide their identities.
