Dutch black metal entity ASGRAUW have premiered its third and final single, “Kosmische Strijd,” from their upcoming album Oorsprong, due out October 31 via Zwaertgevegt and Hidden Marly Production.
Established in 2010, ASGRAUW has firmly established itself as a pillar of authenticity within black metal. Renowned for their atmospheric and second-wave ethos, the band has built a loyal following by delivering music that is fast-paced, hostile, and uniquely captivating. Over the years, ASGRAUW has explored a range of dark themes including death cults, apocalyptic visions, and local myths. Now, the band is set to release their most ambitious project yet: Oorsprong, their sixth full-length album.
Musically, Oorsprong picks up where their previous album Façade left off, but with a dramatic thematic shift. This time, ASGRAUW delves deep into ancient history, weaving a narrative that explores humanity’s disconnection from its ancestral roots and the quest to rediscover them. Drawing inspiration from the Annunaki, the mythic deities believed to have descended from the skies, the album tells a rich story of creation, power, and struggle.
Oorsprong transports listeners to the dawn of civilization, telling the stories of legendary figures like Anu and Alalu, Enki and Enlil, and Gilgamesh and Nergal. The album offers a dramatic portrayal of how these celestial beings shaped early human society, turning primates into a slave civilization through their quest for land and gold. By portraying themselves as divine, these entities were able to control and manipulate early humanity.
Each track of Oorsprong unfolds like a chapter in a grand mythological tale, where gods walk among men and the rise and fall of empires plays out against a backdrop of cosmic ambition. With the album recorded entirely by themselves, ASGRAUW’s signature sound amplifies the album’s complex narrative, offering an immersive sonic journey into a world where myth and history converge.
