Eschaton – Techtalitarian Review

The very beginning with a long guitar shread of album warmer “Inferior Superior” tells the fan what kind of band Eschanton are. If there is any doubt, they fade away with Mac Smith’s vocals. We are talking about a Technical Death Metal band.

It is fair to say “Techtalitarian” is an album of guitars, not only guitars, but shredding guitars. The passion for guitars is a thing that stands out from the album. By the way, top notch guitar playing in here. However, if my dear child of the night listens very carefully, the bass lines as also remarkable with bassist Scott Bradley doing a great job following the guitar duo, or, doing his own shredding as in “Hellfire’s Woe.” Whenever it is possible, we watch drummer Darren Cesca doing the same with his kit using a lot of notes with the snare drum and his double bass drumming. There is a proper word for this: we call it team effort.

There is one thing of Technical Death Metal that really amazes me; the way guitarist build up their riffs using sounds or effects that are in some extent noises, or, disconnect phrases. Sometimes, as in “The Bellicose Duality,” they emulate the sound of the snare drum creating a pounding effect that overwhelms the fan. Other times, they create Prog Rock, maybe inspired in Jazz, long and intricate guitar phrases that could be sometimes doubled by the vocals, or, as in this very particular case, everybody. Add to that some out of the box effects that “Econocracy” brings. Also brings out the attention the disruptive guitar riffs of Antimatter,” the kind that sounds they are over, but they’re not. Long story short, there is not of standard or common with Eschanton‘s music.

Techtalitarian” amazed me because it does not follow Technical Death Metal formula. Yes, there is a formula indeed. Of course, there are moments in the album that Eschanton relied on the formula, but that is not the rule. Truth is, the band tried hard, but very hard to scape from the common ground of other bands and they did it with flying colors. The Tech Death album to recommend your friends that do not know the genre.
