Gatekeeper – Dark Superstition Review

If I had in my hands any kind of available statistics about the genre of releases we receive here, Death Metal would the winner without a shadow of doubt. Well, I could start one, but it would give me so much trouble that it isn’t worth it. To prove me right, Gatekeeper and “Dark Superstition” are here playing in my media.

“Dark Superstition” commences with two astonishing tracks. The album warmer is “Dead Star,” a very unusual tittle for a song, but very related to the themes many bands are exploring these days. The track is somewhat cadenced what gave me the right impression of Gatekeeper being a Melodic Death Metal band. Great drumming, by the way. Matt Arrebollo did a great job here. But, following blast with “Oblivion” made made me think otherwise. Old School Death Metal. It’s interesting how the album bounces from cadenced tracks to faster-than-the-speed-of-light ones. Interestingly, some tracks as “Masterpiece of Chaos” balances both as it commences pedal to the metal to then slow it down a little. “Superstitious Vision” even has some cowbells which give the songs that groov and cadence we all know. And then comes “A Chilling Aura” breaking all the rules with its velocity.

If I had to define “Dark Superstition” with few words I’d say it’s an album that mixes cadence and power in equal doses. An album to please both old school death metallers and modern ones. That’s it. Enjoy.

Gatekeeper “Dark Superstition” will be released on May 17th via Nuclear Blast Records.
