The underground electronic and metal communities are mourning the loss of James Lollar, the creative force behind dark synthwave project GOST, who has died at the age of 46.
The news was confirmed on April 2 via a statement shared across the band’s official social media channels by his management team.
“The whole GOST team is incredibly saddened to inform you that James Cody Lollar, known as GOST, passed away yesterday,” the statement reads. “We are sending all our prayers to his family and friends during this time of grief. He will be remembered as a wonderful human being and a tremendously talented artist.
“We kindly ask that everyone respect the privacy of his loved ones during these difficult times,” the statement continues. “He will be deeply missed by all.”
Lollar, who also performed under the alias Baalberith, carved out a distinct identity within the darker corners of synthwave by blending aggressive electronic textures with metal influences. He launched GOST in 2013, following his time in the Longview, Texas sludge duo VASTE BURAI, and quickly built a reputation for pushing sonic boundaries.
Across his career, GOST released six full-length albums, culminating with Prophecy, which arrived via Metal Blade Records in 2024 to strong critical acclaim. The project’s intense live presence continued to resonate with fans as well, with GOST most recently touring the UK and Europe in late 2025 as main support for French synthwave artist Perturbator (James Kent).
James Lollar’s work left a lasting mark on the evolution of dark electronic music, bridging scenes and inspiring a devoted global following. His passing represents a significant loss to the community he helped shape.
