GOJIRA‘s Grammy win for Best Metal Performance was a bright spot in a lackluster night for rock and metal. However, a hilarious red carpet moment between fellow nominees Courtney LaPlante of SPIRITBOX and Poppy (whose collaboration with KNOCKED LOOSE on “Suffocate” was also nominated) stole the show.
Instead of correcting the interviewer, LaPlante playfully went along with the misidentification. The interviewer began by introducing her as “rock royalty, Poppy,” to which LaPlante reacted with a face that the interviewer misinterpreted as uncertainty about her royal status. The resulting exchange was both funny and impressively quick-witted on LaPlante‘s part.
LaPlante ultimately decided to play along and responded: “I am Poppy and I am really happy to be here nominated with KNOCKED LOOSE. I really hope we win.”
When asked how many women have been nominated in the metal category, LaPlante hilariously responds: “I haven’t looked at that, but I just always know that, you know it’s time for one of us to win. And I hope it’s me or SPIRITBOX. Courtney is awesome.”
