Jet Jaguar – Severance Review

Metal music has its funny facts. I had the feeling that Jaguar, and its derivations, was a very popular name for Metal bands. mostly due to the eponymous NWOBHM legends. Well, just a quick look at the Encyclopaedia Metallum to see I was right. The search showed 11 bands, but there is one missing; the Brazilian 1980s Jaguar. Another interesting fact is that this Jet Jaguar sounds as NWOBHM as all other Jaguars sounded. Well, there are some exceptions. However, to be fair with, “Severance” sounds more as an updated form of the NWOBHM.

Even tough I said “Severance” was more as an updated form of the NWOBHM, I have to say it is a very varied album with many sonancies. The thing is that they all point to the NWOBHM one way or another. Maybe it is a tradition of the band name, if there is such thing. Curiously, when I was listening to “Anthropocene” I felt some Def Lepard in it. In fact, this is such a difficult thing to write because it is not something palpable, it is just a feeling. I mean, the song does not sound as Def Lepard, but vocals do remind me of Joe Elliot’s. On the other hand, the guitars tell a very different story, mainly the leads. With “Evil Within” they are crushy, strong as hell with that hard hitting. Undeniably, they sound much more from a Groove Thrash Metal band than NWOBHM, but as we all know, NWOBHM have always tried new sonancies in their albums. Now, with “Call Of The Fight” it is impossible not to remember Van Halen’s Eruption.” Ok, technically not exact, but the feeling and the mood are the same. From all the tracks of the album, this is the one with more NWOBHM taste. The following, and grand finale, “Hunter” keeps the same track, and the faith.

Not an album that will shake the entrails of the Earth, but an album that will be alot o fun to listen to these rainy lazy days. Moreover, it is an album that makes us believe the future of Metal music lies in the past. I mean, the memory of all the great music made in the past. Otherwise, there would not be bands as Jet Jaguar and the likes.
