JOURNEY’s JONATHAN CAIN Reveals He Deliberately Gave Fans False Hope About STEVE PERRY Return

Jonathan Cain has acknowledged that his recent comments about a possible return of Steve Perry were not entirely genuine, revealing he deliberately stirred speculation among fans.

Back in mid-February, the JOURNEY keyboardist hinted that Perry could make a guest appearance during the band’s farewell run, “Final Frontier,” which kicked off at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock at the time, Cain said: “Neal already asked, and he says [Perry‘s] thinking about it. I hope he comes out. It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them.”

The remarks quickly ignited excitement among longtime fans hoping for a reunion. However, Cain has now clarified in a new interview with Rolling Stone that the suggestion was intentional misdirection.

“I just kind of planted a little seed out,” Cain tells Rolling Stone. “I was trying to fish a little bit, and say, ‘Well, he’s thinking about it.’ He came immediately out and said, ‘No, I’m not.’ I kind of did that on purpose, because there’s just so much fake AI stuff going on. You just look at it and go, ‘Wait a minute, no, that’s not true. None of this is true.'”

As Cain predicted, Perry swiftly shut down the rumors. Just hours after the initial comments surfaced, the legendary vocalist addressed fans directly via social media: “To all my friends – I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly. While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for JOURNEY, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest,” he said.

“I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too. But I’m continuing to explore new creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.

“Thank you for your continued support throughout the years. Your loyalty has never gone unnoticed, and I am forever humbly grateful.

“Sincerely, Steve Perry”.

While a full-fledged reunion appears off the table, Perry has shared stages with his former bandmates on rare occasions in recent years. Most notably, he reunited with JOURNEY when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2017. Although he appeared onstage and delivered a speech alongside the band, he did not perform with them during the ceremony.

Perry’s last full concert with JOURNEY took place in early 1987. He later briefly rejoined the group in 1991 for a performance honoring late concert promoter Bill Graham. In 2005, he also appeared with the band when they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Meanwhile, JOURNEY’s “Final Frontier” tour continues across North America, with dozens of dates scheduled through early July and more expected to be announced soon.
