Karyn Crisis' Gospel of the Witches

There are multiple ways for expressing yourself in the music business, and when I say business I don’t mean making money, I mean making music. Just a way of expressing. Some prefer to be intimate or minimalist; others prefer to make a lot of noise, but it’s possible to do both. Metal shows that to the world for whom want to see. Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches with “Covenant” prove it’s also possible to subvert a tradition following another tradition. In this case, despite all the Black Metal visual and features, Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches are much more near Coven or Lucifer’s Friends than to Malevolent Creation or Immortal or any other Death/Black Metal bands. “Covenant” is more subtle with tiny little pieces of rebellion and others. Of course, there are some dashes of Black Sabbath as in “Womb of the World.”

“Covenant” is intimate and minimalist. Songs are slow and a bit shoegazed which means that Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches are more interested in passing the message than making people bang their heads with their music. It’s an album to listen with your mind, heart and soul not only your ears. By the way, it’s creepy! There are lots of passages that make one gray as in “Drawing Down the Moon” and “Stretto di Barba.” Besides all the creepy mood, there is some melancholy that fills in the air. Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches do their best to maintain the mood. Moreover, Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches show all the power that comes from the feminine. It’s the sacred feminine that fecunds the earth. “Covenant” is an ode to all goddesses that walk around this sad and lonely and machist tiny little world. The music is important, but the message, in this case, is much more. Intent means everything in the world of heavy music. After all, it’s not always that we have an album with three songs talking about motherhood.

The twelve tracks herein are an ode to all feminility that there is in this lonely and sad and machist planet. They are subtle, kind, but after all strong as hell as all women. Just another way to express all your regret, rebellion, and anger. Just this.
