On the May 13 episode of SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk,” SLAYER guitarist Kerry King addressed the rumors that circulated about PANTERA‘s Philip Anselmo potentially singing on King‘s debut solo album.
When asked about the extent of discussions with Philip, Kerry responded: “It didn’t get real far. And everything you saw online, that was just all rumors, because it never got past me and Phil talking about it.
“I’ve known Phil decades — I’ve known Phil before [PANTERA‘s] Cowboy From Hell came out,” King continued. “He’s been a friend of mine throughout the years. And all the business suits wanted me to go that way — my manager, my record company, my promoter, everybody — because it’s it’s gonna put massive butts in seats, so to speak. But talking to [Phil] about it, I know this is too thrashy a project for him. I’m not saying he can’t do it; I’m saying I don’t think he wanted to do it. But we did a little bit of legwork on it, and especially once [the] PANTERA [reunion] came up, that just blew it out of the water.”
King will release his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise, on May 17. In addition to King, the album features DEATH ANGEL vocalist Mark Osegueda, longtime SLAYER drummer Paul Bostaph, former HELLYEAH bassist Kyle Sanders, and ex–MACHINE HEAD and ex-VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel.
According to King, the new music consists of “various religious topics, some war entries, heavy stuff, punky stuff, doomy stuff, and spooky stuff, with Herculean speeds achieved. If you’ve ever liked any SLAYER throughout any part of our history,” he adds, “there’s something on this record that you’ll get into, be it classic punk, fast punk, thrash, or just plain heavy metal!”
As King admits, “Even with a record in the can, I’ve still got so many songs that need to be finished. This is what I know how to do…number one being music, number two being metal. It’s been a part of my life for 40 years, and I’m nowhere near being done.”
