Malefic – Impermanence Review

We all agree that one of the main characteristics that makes Metal music what it is the guitar riffing. It is the guitar riffing that gives Metal music its unique personality because there are many other genres that use, for instance, the distorced guitars or are guitar oriented, but none of them are based on the riffing. They use full chords instead. Also, there is the power chord, another important feature to Metal music, however Punk and Hardcore rely their music on it as well. Therefore, the first glimpse on songs as “Blood Of The Throne,” “Impermanence‘s” first blood, gives me the thrills because I am sure with no shadow of doubt that I am listening to Metal.

An interesting fact about Malefic, is that even though the band has been among us since 2007, “Impermanence” is their debut album. By the way, the band has been working on it since 2018. A pretty long time indeed, isn’t it? As an ambicious band, Malefic were formed with the intention to modernize Black Metal. The band created an unique approach drawing from thrash and death metal influences, appeals to metalheads across subgenres.

Musicwise, “Impermanence” truly sounds as a combination of Metal subgenres. Some of the guitars, as the aforementioned “Blood Of The Throne” sound very thrashy. Other tracks as “Obsidian Earth” sound pretty near Melodic Death Metal. There are also tracks as the melodic “Echoes Of Silence” that border the epic verve Power Metal loves with that very known machine gun drumming. Of course, the tracks does a shift and gets pretty differentwith a very complex instrumental. By the way, the polished and complex instrumentals are also a highlight of the album and determine the band’s musical signature. Honoring its tittle, grand finale It Haunts gives its contribution in the band’s intent of modernizing Black Metal. The track closes with a very interesting guitar strumming.

Yes, “Impermanence” is an album that gives Black Metal a different aspect. Malefic‘s prone to make them grand and complex contributes a lot to their intent. The album is a kind of tour around Metal music subgenres that will please the fan a lot.
