MASTODON Drummer Brann Dailor: Why I Stopped Doing Drugs

MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor talked about doing drugs in the past, saying on The Jasta Show(transcribed by UG):

“[I used to do drugs] up until my early 20s, then I stopped, because I had a… It was me and John [Adubato, from the band Burned By the Sun], we had a bad memory.

“We did some liquid acid. I’m 21, or something like that, I went over to the guy’s house and he’s like, ‘I don’t have anything to drop this on.’ He pulled out this pizza cardboard and he’s like, ‘F*ck it, just hold your tongue out.’

“I was like, ‘Alright.’ And he was like *DRRRRT* and he goes, ‘Oh, f*ck.’ ‘What? Why did you say that?’ *imitates low-pitch slow voice* ‘I GAVE YOU WAY ТОО МUUUUUCH!’ [Laughs]. I got my tongue out, and I started wiping it off frantically, and he was like, ‘That’s not gonna help.’ So I had it bad. And so Adobato was like, ‘Give me the same.’ And we went in together. Super heavy.

“It was a lot of crazy visuals, it was really intense. Lasted a long time, like 20 hours or something. But like at 6 in the morning or something, the phone rang, my girlfriend at the time answered the phone – she was in the other room sitting on the couch.

“You know when the phone rings, you’re like, ‘Oh my God! The phone! Someone from the outside world… Why are they calling? What’s happened? At 6 in the morning! No one calls at the 6 in the morning. It gotta be bad news.’ So we can hear from the other room, ‘Oh my God… Oh my God, no. Oh my God you’re kidding? Yes… Yeah… I’ll be right there. Okay. I’m so sorry… Ok, I’ll be right there.’ *Click, click.*

“‘What happened?!’ She comes in the room, she’s all like… The lady that’s working at the diner at her shift had a heart attack. ‘They rushed her to the hospital, she might not make it.’ Like… *GASP* I was like, you can’t handle devastating news like that. And that’s when I decided…

“At the time my mom was in the hospital, things were like really touch and go. She was going in and out of intensive care, and it was just not cool for me to be on another planet.

“Because that phone call could have been, ‘Hey your mom is back in ICU, and it don’t look good, you need to get here right now.’ What if I went to the f*cking hospital head full of acid?

“So I was like, ‘I can not ever do that.’ That was the end of my tripping career. It was fun while it lasted, I had a great time doing it, I had a lot of fun moments, but it was time to grow up. Because I’m an adult. I have responsibilities. And you can’t be doing that all the time. Like I’ve said before, I’ve found the doors of perception, I know where they are, I can go through them, I don’t have to be on that anymore to go find it.”

Asked if he was ever the same since, Brann replied:

“I don’t know. I’m just who I am now. But I will say, when I would do acid throughout those maybe 5 or 6 years of messing around with it, it definitely changed my perception, but also made me seek out like, crazy movies and crazy music.

“‘Cause we’re like, ‘OK, we’re gonna trip and we’re gonna listen to this, and we’re gonna listen to Frank Zappa, and we’re gonna listen to…’

“It made you wanna try and find craziest stuff to listen to. Mr. Bungle and Praxis and Material, and John Zorn stuff, Naked City… You know, all that crazy stuff. So that was definitely like a vehicle for that.”
