Melancholost – Tales From The Poisoned Apple Review

Life is a constant movement, so they say. I happilly happen to agree to disagree. Well, in terms. In fact, nothing is eternal besides diamonds, I guess. This uncertainty is another fact of life. There are albums that make me feel like this.

I have to tell you, my dear child of the night, this band name “Melancholost” is very accurate on telling what happens with the music in this album “Tales From The Poisoned Apple,” which was another happy choice from what I heard. Melancholy, a dark melancholy, is the main musical thematic. It is interesting how the songs in the album reflect this melancholic verve as albums are much more than the music. They are the feeling that envolves all the music. Feelings are usually hidden underneath the music or they are highlighted as Melancholost did. This melancholy is much more than simple sadness, it is a state of spirit or, even, a kind of zeigeist. From where I am standing, I believe it comes from the feeling we are all imperfect beings living the hard life in a tough environment that requires a lot from us on a daily basis. We have to be just perfect in everything we do. There is no room for mistakes or uncertainty anymore. Nor time. We are living in a constant unnatural urgency.

I am saying all this because I have no other choice than compare Melancholost Tales From The Poisoned Apple” with Solemnity Opus Barbaricum,” both bands from mastermind Sven The Axe who does the vocals, the guitars, the bass, and the keyboards. The mood in both albums are of a blatant difference; the first is a standard Old School Heavy Metal album while this one is the debut album of his modern Gothic Metal band. In fact, I believe it is natural artists try to diverse their musical experiences and try new artistical paths. On the other hand, I am not sure his reasons why. I might only wonder.

Regarding the music I heard in “Tales From The Poisoned Apple,” I cannot posit it is a sad album with sad music. No, no, no. The feeling here is more subtle than meets the eye and, I guess, this is the most positive fact of it. The fan is not flooded with those long and endless songs with dying cadences and slow everything. To be fair, the album is in a regular pace. But not the intent, this is one is full of the melancholy I aforementioned here.

Being absolutely fair, it is this kind of music that makes life on this sad and lonely and pathetic little planet bearable.
