Fresh details have emerged regarding the tragic motorcycle accident that claimed the life of former MASTODON guitarist Brent Hinds. Newly released Atlanta Police Department documents and 911 calls shed more light on the events leading up to the fatal crash.

According to the incident report, Hinds was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle late on the night of August 20 when he was struck by an SUV making a left turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE, less than two miles from downtown Atlanta. Police say the SUV driver failed to yield while turning.

Responding officers arrived at the scene at approximately 11:35 p.m. and found Hinds unresponsive. Medical personnel quickly determined that he had suffered severe injuries. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV, who remained at the scene, told investigators that she was “positive the light was green” as she made her turn. However, a witness gave conflicting testimony, claiming the light was red at the time of the crash. Both that witness and another bystander also noted that Hinds appeared to be riding at a high speed before the impact.

A 911 caller who was two cars behind the accident reported seeing Hinds lifted into the air after the collision, spinning several times before falling. The caller noted that his left leg appeared to buckle over his right. While they did not witness the full impact, they recalled hearing it clearly and then seeing Hinds spinning.

The responding officer documented that when he first reached Hinds, the guitarist was still breathing and moving, though he had visible injuries to his head, arms, and torso. Despite being rushed to the hospital, his injuries proved fatal.
