In a recent interview with India’s Sinusoidal Music, OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt opened up about the possibility of a second album from STORM CORROSION—the acclaimed collaboration with PORCUPINE TREE’s Steven Wilson.
When asked if STORM CORROSION is “going anywhere” more than a decade after the release of their self-titled debut, Åkerfeldt explained (via Blabbermouth): “No, it’s not really going anywhere. I mean, other than when we talk—or text rather. Usually when we’re texting, [Steven] usually sends me funny clips or something. So we’re not necessarily talking about any collaborations or music or anything like that in terms of us doing something. But we have talked a lot over the years about doing another STORM CORROSION, especially, because we’re both very happy with that record.”
Despite their satisfaction with the debut, Mikael noted that the duo isn’t keen on repeating themselves creatively.
“None of us, we don’t really know what to do, because we are not the type of people who would want to repeat ourselves. Even if I think that album is great, and there’s more to do with that sound, I think we wanna probably do something different. And I’m thinking maybe something that’s even more hard, more special, eclectic. I think it’s probably gonna happen at some point.”
The original Storm Corrosion album, released in 2012, marked a unique fusion of progressive rock and experimental textures from two of the genre’s most respected figures. It debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., selling 9,400 copies in its first week, and reached No. 45 on the official U.K. chart.
Last September, the album was reissued by Kscope in an expanded 2024 edition featuring a new Dolby Atmos mix by Wilson, alongside high-resolution stereo, 5.1 DTS-HD Surround Sound, and instrumental mixes of all six tracks. The deluxe package also included a mini-documentary and a bonus live track—a rendition of “Drag Ropes” recorded during a rare live performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2015, when Mikael joined Steven and his band on stage. This remains the only live performance to date of any STORM CORROSION material.
While nothing is set in stone yet, fans of both Åkerfeldt and Wilson can hold onto hope that a follow-up to Storm Corrosion may eventually come to fruition—and, if it does, it promises to explore new and exciting musical territory.
