Original ARCH ENEMY Singer JOHAN LIIVA Responds To Reunion Rumors

Johan Liiva

With the metal world still reeling from the sudden departure of longtime ARCH ENEMY vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, speculation has naturally shifted toward who might step in next. One name that immediately began circulating among fans was that of Johan Liiva — the band’s original frontman and the voice behind their formative trilogy of albums Black Earth (1996), Stigmata (1998), and Burning Bridges (1999).

Liiva decided to address the chatter directly after a fan asked him on social media whether he was “going back” to ARCH ENEMY in light of the shake-up. His answer was brief but clear, offering insight while still keeping the situation shrouded in uncertainty.

“No, I am not,” he wrote. “I am just as surprised as all of you. I think Alissa was perfect for AE. The mystery goes on…”

Liiva’s name has resurfaced in part because of his continued creative ties to several current ARCH ENEMY members. Back in 2016, he joined forces with Michael Amott, Daniel Erlandsson, Sharlee D’Angelo, and former ARCH ENEMY guitarist Christopher Amott for BLACK EARTH — a special project that toured Japan performing songs from the band’s first three albums.

His comment arrives just days after ARCH ENEMY announced White-Gluz’s exit in a short statement released on November 23, thanking her for her years with the band and hinting that 2026 will bring new beginnings. The message offered no explanation for the split, fueling even more curiosity among fans.

Alissa soon confirmed the news through her own social media channels, expressing gratitude for her 12-year run with the melodic death metal titans. She also teased major plans on the horizon, unveiling “The Room Where She Died” — the first single from her forthcoming debut solo album — and promising “big surprises” to come in 2026.

White-Gluz originally joined ARCH ENEMY in 2014, stepping in after Angela Gossow retired from frontwoman duties to focus on management. During her decade with the band, Alissa appeared on four studio albums — War Eternal (2014), Will To Power (2017), Deceivers (2022), and Blood Dynasty (2025) — steering the group through some of their most commercially visible years.
