PETA has reached out to LED ZEPPELIN’s Robert Plant, suggesting he temporarily go by “Robert Plant Wool” this November in support of Plant Wool Month, a campaign highlighting plant-based alternatives to animal wool.

In a letter to the singer, PETA explained that a temporary name change could help raise awareness of yarns made from hemp, cotton, orange waste, and other plant-based materials. The organization also pointed to ethical and environmental concerns associated with the wool and cashmere industries.

“Plant Wool Month celebrates yarns that are animal-free, plastic-free, and sustainable, promoting fashion choices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect animals,” said Elisa Allen, PETA Vice President of Programs.

PETA also notes that wool production often involves procedures on lambs such as tail docking and castration. In addition, sheep farming contributes to methane emissions and requires significant land, energy, and chemical use. According to the Made-By Environmental Benchmark for Fibres, sheep’s wool is ranked as a “Class E” material, the lowest category.

PETA is asking Robert Plant to sing the praises of plant wool with a temporary name change that reminds everyone that nothing compares to soft, natural, and eco-friendly plant wool.”

The campaign also aims to recognize the efforts of farmers, textile makers, and designers who work with plant-based fibers to create garments, from knitwear to tailored suits.

Robert Plant has not yet publicly responded to PETA’s letter.
