Till Lindemann, the lead singer of RAMMSTEIN, has been ordered to pay more than $690,000 (67 million rubles) by the International Commercial Arbitration Court of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The case, reported by TASS, stemmed from the cancellation of a planned performance in Tver, Russia, in August 2021.
The concert was set to take place at the Afanasy Brewery in Tver as part of the “Maklarin for the Motherland” festival, organized by local businessman Maxim Larin to coincide with his 50th birthday. The Russian company LLC “Prime Marketing” had fully paid Lindemann for a 70-minute performance, but the artist did not perform and failed to return the payment. The court classified the case as one of “unjust enrichment.”
The concert was called off after local authorities allegedly prevented the band’s vehicles from reaching the festival venue for rehearsals and conducted a search of Lindemann‘s hotel, enforcing compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.
Belarusian rock band BI-2, also set to perform, withdrew following warnings from authorities regarding the event’s “inadmissibility.”
In a separate legal action, a Russian arbitration court ruled in favor of Larin against Lindemann‘s producer, Anar Reiband. Reiband was ordered to pay 10 million rubles ($100,000) to Larin. Larin had alleged that Reiband had accepted an advance payment for advertising services in the Tver region but had subsequently failed to fulfill the agreement.
