In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, former VAN HALEN vocalist Sammy Hagar talked about the “Best of All Worlds” tour and explained why the live setlist features fewer songs from the David Lee Roth era.
When asked about the experience of performing “Panama” and “Jump” on this tour, Hagar responded: “‘Panama,’ I’ll sing that song every day of my life. It’s a great song. I love doing covers. In Cabo [Wabo, Hagar‘s club], I do LED ZEPPELIN all the time. I do CREAM, I do THE [ROLLING] STONES. I like to play my favorite songs, and ‘Panama’ would have to be one of them.”
“‘Jump,’ to be honest with you, I enjoyed, because all the songs from my era are in so high of a register to sing,” he continued. “At the end of the show, to do ‘Jump’ almost at the end after two hours and ten minutes on stage, it was like I get a vocal break. It’s a cool song, and that was for the fans, and we only did half of it. We didn’t do the full song. I felt good about doing that. I felt good for the fans.”
When asked if the band discussed about adding more Roth-era tunes, Hagar said: “Oh, that’s enough, three, and that’s because we played so long. If we only played an hour and a half, I would just do one, and it would always be ‘Panama.’“
“Well, maybe two because I like when Mikey [Michael Anthony] sings ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love.’ He’s singing it so good now, and the way Joe [Satriani]’s playing it…it’s the best that song has sounded in many, many years, and I’m not criticizing anybody. I’m just saying we’re bringing that mother home, and I get to go sit down and ice my knees and my back.”
Hagar previously revealed that his highly praised and commercially successful “Best of All Worlds” summer 2024 tour will extend into 2025 as “The Best of All Worlds Tour – The Residency” at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The residency will reunite the powerhouse lineup of Sammy, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff with a special, Las Vegas-exclusive setlist, running from April 30 to May 17, 2025. This residency offers a unique opportunity to witness this legendary band perform some of their greatest hits in an unforgettable live experience.
This highly anticipated residency will showcase Sammy’s career-spanning hits, from seminal breakouts with MONTROSE, his iconic solo hits, and a deep dive into his tenure with VAN HALEN, CHICKENFOOT, and everything in between. Presented in partnership by Live Nation and MGM Resorts International, the residency will be custom-designed for Dolby Live, giving fans an intimate, high-energy concert experience in the 5,200-seat entertainment venue.
“I’m so looking forward to this residency and being able to stay in one place so we can get the sound and production completely dialed in,” said Hagar. “It also allows the band to experiment with the setlist every night — that’s why it’s going to be exclusive to Las Vegas. Instead of traveling all day on tour when there’s no time to rehearse and make changes. I plan on digging deeper into the VAN HALEN catalog, and my solo career, MONTROSE and CHICKENFOOT, as well. The fans are in for a lot of surprises.”
