SEPULTURA’s DERRICK GREEN Reveals He’s ‘Putting Together’ A New Band

SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green says he is already laying the groundwork for his next musical chapter, revealing that he is actively assembling a new band while the group continues its ongoing farewell tour.

In a new interview with U.K.’s Heavy Matters, Green reflected on what comes after SEPULTURA wraps up its long goodbye run, making it clear that music will remain central to his life, even as he branches out into new territory.

“There’s so many possibilities, endless possibilities,” he said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “I’ve always been into photography, and I will continue to do that. I’ve been really into fitness and health and this plant-based world, and I’ll continue doing that. And I will continue doing music. I definitely would love to do another band. And I’m putting that together as we speak.”

Green explained that the process of forming a new group is both exciting and challenging, especially after spending decades in a tightly bonded lineup.

“Trying to align with certain people, it’s like starting from scratch — well, not necessarily from scratch, but it’s definitely a challenge to form that connection with people again — different people. After being with a band for so long — I’ve been especially with [SEPULTURA guitarist] Andreas [Kisser] and [SEPULTURA bassist] Paulo [Xisto Pinto Jr.] for so many years, since like 1998 — so it’s interesting to think back and then now be where we’re at, where it’s just, like, ‘Okay, I’ll try to find other people to jam with.’ It’s exciting, I have to say.”

While Green did not reveal specific names or details about the lineup, he did outline the musical direction he wants to explore. Drawing from his history with SEPULTURA as well as his earlier influences, he says the new material will blend multiple styles.

“I was able to learn so much and take away so much being with SEPULTURA, and I will use different elements from that,” Derrick explained. “Then, the hardcore, of course, it’s always flowing in my blood. And then also a lot of melodical-type stuff I was doing. I felt that I’ve grown and evolved in being able to do that. So I wanna have a mix of that, and for sure have a heavy groove on whatever it is I’m gonna do in the future. So I’m looking forward to really combining all those different elements.”

Green’s comments come as SEPULTURA continue their farewell tour, which began in March 2024 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The band has been marking the end of an era while still releasing new material, including the recent EP The Cloud Of Unknowing, released via Nuclear Blast.

SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser has also previously hinted at post-band creative plans, including collaborations and side projects, as the group approaches the end of its decades-long run.

In a last year’s interview with Jarek Szubrycht at Poland’s Mystic Festival, Kisser was asked how he plans to spend his time after the band wraps up its farewell tour.

“Since I joined SEPULTURA in ’87, we never stopped — never,” Andreas said. “Even on the lockdown, we created an album. When we changed singers and managers and stuff, we were always rehearsing, we were always working towards the future and et cetera. And it feels like it’s a good momentum because we’re still young enough to be motivated to start something else from scratch. Of course, I’ll be involved with music. That’s what I do, I love to do. I’m not gonna quit SEPULTURA to sell cars or something like that. I’m gonna keep doing music. I still study music and et cetera.

“I’m not really concerned too much about future,” he continued. “Like I said, we have another two years of this touring. I like to enjoy the moment, like we are doing here. Every show has been amazing. It’s a fantastic feeling. I have so many different options. I already have another band called DE LA TIERRA. I have a radio show in São Paulo with my son for 13 years now. And I have some parallel things that I already do that I might have more time, really, to dedicate to those. And I also wanna do a guitar lesson, finally a video talking about my style, SEPULTURA‘s music, acoustic guitar and stuff, to put more time on that and really do that. A lot of people ask for that as well, so I wanna really have more time to do this. And I know so many musicians, so many bands. I’m really talking to people, ‘Oh, let’s do this, let’s do that.’ I have an idea to do a reggae project with Derrick [GreenSEPULTURA frontman]. Who knows? [Laughs] I like to keep it open. I mean, it’s a little scary, but at the same time it’s very exciting to feel that freedom that we could really express and really see what happens. I think that’s why we are stopping — to get away of the comfort zone, to get away [and] artistically having different air to breathe.”
