Bölzer – Lese Majesty

Bölzer with “Lese Majesty” are a fine surprise. First track “A Shepherd in Wolven Skin” is a combination of Metal and other style’s features that impresses specially the scary whistle by the middle of it. The combination of features herein makes it very difficult to label, or even to explain. Labels are very useful to express certain things. They make it easy, for instance, to explain the music a band does. What Bölzer do here in “Lese Majesty” is very difficult. I had to listen to “Lese Majesty” a lot of times to get started writing something about it.

Okay, then, Let’s do our best. “Lese Majesty” is composed of four tracks; two of them are really long within the average of ten minutes. One of them is short working as a spoken bridge to a longer track. The most dazzling thing about “Lese Majesty” is the combination of vocals. But it’s not the usual combination of harsh and sweet, demonic and angelic, sweet and bitter, things like that. It’s the gutural with the clean gothic. Bölzer combines Black Metal with Gothic all the time in “Lese Majesty” and that’s what makes it, uh, different. “Into The Temple Of Spears” is the track that shows it the best because there is a balance between the two features. On the other hand, the aforementioned first track “A Shepherd in Wolven Skin” kind of unbalance them. The difference is that in “Into The Temple Of Spears” things are more organic and natural, in “A Shepherd in Wolven Skin” they seem to be not so well resolved.

When you think you’re getting used to Bölzer’s style comes “Ave Fluvius! Danu Be Praised!” with one opening minute of silence (?). Yeah, one minute of silence before the song starts. “Ave Fluvius! Danu Be Praised!” has an interesting cadence in the beginning a lot of plot twists in its twelve minutes. Well, eleven if considered the one minute of silence left. It’s a track where Bölzer exercise lots of emotions. Anger is the most visible of them. It’s a track with some out of the box choruses for a Metal record. I guess it’s the Gothic part talking. By the ninth minute, when you think the music ois over, there is a bit more silence. Not absolute silence, but a silence with some sonic effects.

“Lese Majesty” is a complex album to analyse. It’s full of strange to Metal features, but those features give it the spice it needs to outstand. Life isn’t easy those.

Bölzer  “Lese Majesty” will be released on November 29th via Lightning & Sons.
