SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR vocalist Corey Taylor was asked by Kerrang to single out the song from either of his bands that personally means the most to him, to which he replied: “Oh, sh*t… That’s a good question. I have several. With both bands, actually. [Slipknot‘s] ‘Snuff’ [off 2009’s ‘All Hope Is Gone’] probably is one of the ones that means the most to me now just because of the correlation between it and Paul [Gray].
“Really, if Paul hadn’t championed that song, I don’t think we would have recorded it. But he loved it and saw the potential with it and really wanted us to do it. So now when I play it during my solo shows, that’s who that’s for. I try to do it as well as I can.
“With Stone Sour, I have to go with ‘Through Glass’ just for the fact that… I didn’t know what that song is going to be.
“I literally wrote that song with food poisoning, sitting in a bed, shi*tting myself. This is a true story. In Gothenburg, Sweden. I was on [2004’s] ‘Vol. 3’ tour with Slipknot. We got to Gothenburg, Sweden on a day off. We were all stoked because that tour was long.
“The first thing me and [Slipknot percussionist Chris] Fehn do – because Fehn got it too – is we went across the street to the McDonalds. We just shoved a couple of cheeseburgers in our face. We were like, ‘Alright, see you in like 10 minutes.’ And then hell broke loose. And I mean, holding onto the bowl. Naked. Hell broke loose.
And that lasted – thank God we had this time off – for two and a half days. And it was the f*ckin’ worst sh*t I’ve ever felt. Not only was it going out this exit *ponts to his anus*, it was flying… I mean flying from [my mouth].
“And at one point, I didn’t have the strength to put the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on. And here comes housecleaning. You would have thought they caught me cutting up a body. It was that level of ‘Holy sh*t!’ And, of course, I’m weak, I’m dehydrated, there’s nothing left in me.
“But – and here’s the little postscript on this – I couldn’t move and the only channel that was really in English was MTV Europe. Which, at the time, was even worse than it is today really, in my opinion. And every song just got worse and worse and worse to the point where I wanted to… Like, it wasn’t enough that I wanted to die because of the food poisoning. Now I just wanted to die just to make this noise go away. And i just started thinking this song in my head.
“Once I got a little strength, I rolled over and I wrote the chorus out. Briefly. And then I just started writing the lyrics. I didn’t even work on the music until I got home about three months later. And that song’s a very angry song. A lot of people are like, ‘I dedicate this to my baby.’ Or, ‘This song is about somebody in prison.’
No. No. This song is about f*ck MTV. Like, it’s such an angry song. And the fact that it has turned into this whole thing where it’s out of my hands now and the fact that it’s… Even more people sing it now then they did 10 years ago when it came out. Or 12 years ago, actually. It’s astounding.
“So I think that’s the one that I’m the most proud of with Stone Sour. Because I had no f*cking intentions of writing a No. 1 song. I was just throwing up out of my ass.”
