At yesterday’s (June 20) auction at Christie’s in NYC, David Gilmour‘s collection of over 120 guitars exceeded all expectations by raising $21.5 million, all of which will go to the PINK FLOYD guitarist’s charity foundation.
David‘s legendary Black Strat set the new world record, which was sold for staggering $3,975,000.
Another big success was Gilmour‘s 1969 Martin D-35. Originally estimated at $10,000-$20,000, the acoustic guitar used on “Wish You Were Here” fetched $1,095,000.
Elsewhere in the auction, David‘s “#0001” Fender Stratocaster, known for its use during The Wall recording sessions, fetched $1,815,000 after a four-minute bidding war. Speaking of The Wall sessions, David‘s 1955 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop reeled in $447,000.
Other highlights include the $615,000 paid for the Candy Apple Red 1984 Fender Strat, once again smashing the original $25,000 estimate. David‘s rare 1958 Gretsch White Penguin was sold for $447,000, while his 1981 Charvel went for $75,000. The 1985 Gibson J-200 Celebrity reeled in $243,750, while the 1974 Jedson lap-steel – estimated at just $2,000 – fetched $300,000.
