Deathening – Antifascist Death Metal

Sometimes I keep wondering what makes a death band stands out from the crowd of zillion bands. As all musical genres, Metal has its limits, I mean, rules. There were rigid standards to follow in the past. Well, I guess they have never been that rigid. Critics thought they were rigid. Hardcore fans did as well, but bands I guess never did. So how does anyone explain the great chances in the style from the end of the 1960s until today? Metal music Black Sabbath, Cactus, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Coven, and many others did is very different from today’s Metal music. It’s a no-brainer.

Death metal is no exception to the rules. Born as the ultimate rebellion into Heavy Metal, the style also has its standards. Some say they are far more rigid, but I guess it’s only a matter of speaking. If you compare Death to Cannibal Corpse, two contemporary bands and pioneers of death metal, there are some important differences between them. So the burning question remains: what makes a death band stand out from the crowd?

This review may answer the question. Deathening with “Antifascist Death Metal” have all the items I consider important to make a band look up. First things first, the epiphany comes with the title “Antifascist Death Metal.” As you may have noticed, Metal Addicts is a page that really doesn’t support fascism, and in my opinion no true metalhead should. But, you are free to think the way whatever you may. Musicwise, the most important thing in a Metal band. Don’t get me wrong, I put politics first here in this case, but they are not that important. Just in case you have the wrong politics view, I mean, you know what I’m talking about. Back to musicwise, Deathening are a very, but very creative band. There are no boundaries imposed to them. They interwove lots of layers of all Metal’s mannerisms.

Vocals are still one of the most rigid standards in death metal. As a matter of fact, death metal requires a certain type of sick vocals, but, of course, there are ways of going beyond. Kalle Nimhagen does that. He varies his vocal abilities a lot. Besides moaning, howling and grunting the dude does some other interesting sounds with his voice. This makes listening to “Antifascist Death Metal” much more fun.

“Antifascist Death Metal” is one of the most important albums of the year due to its political stand and, of course, due to its awesome sonance. We will always praise a band with a social agenda. A big hail to Deathening dudes!
