Formed in 1984 by singer and drummer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, SOUNDGARDEN emerged from Seattle’s burgeoning music scene as pioneers of the grunge movement. The band’s lineup solidified with the addition of drummer Matt Cameron in 1986 and bassist Ben Shepherd in 1990, helping define their heavier, darker sound that combined elements of hard rock and alternative.

SOUNDGARDEN rose to massive critical and commercial success, particularly with their 1994 album Superunknown, which featured hits like “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman.” Both tracks earned Grammy Awards and cemented the band’s place as one of the “big four” grunge bands alongside NIRVANA, PEARL JAM, and ALICE IN CHAINS.

Despite disbanding in 1997 due to artistic differences, the band reunited in 2010 and released King Animal in 2012, marking their return to the stage and studio. Tragically, the band lost frontman Chris Cornell in 2017, a sudden and unexpected loss that shook the music world.
