TOOL continued their tour of New Zealand with another night of surprises at Spark Arena in Auckland on November 23rd. Following a historic performance the previous night that saw the return of Undertow’s “Crawl Away” and long-absent tracks like “H.” and “Disposition,” the band dug even deeper into their catalog, delighting fans with more rare gems.
The standout of the evening was “Prison Sex,” the second single from TOOL’s triple-platinum debut Undertow, performed live for the first time since April 2002. Longtime followers were also thrilled to hear “Intension” from 10,000 Days, last played in March 2014, and the live debut of “Mockingbeat” from Fear Inoculum, a fresh addition that immediately caught the crowd’s attention.
TOOL’s approach to setlists has long been a source of debate among fans. With decades of material to draw from, diehard followers have often complained about repetition, and earlier this year, some were so disappointed by performances at the inaugural “Tool Live In The Sand” festival that they threatened legal action. Yet, the Auckland shows prove that TOOL is actively listening to fans’ calls for variety, blending classics with deep cuts and newer material.
