Vomitheist - NekroFvneral Review

Have you my dear child of the night considered why Death Metal has conquered a definite place in the black hearts of all metalheads – well, at least a great deal of them? The answer is no occan razor, that is, the problem-solving principle that recommends searching for explanations constructed with the smallest possible set of elements. In my opinion it is because Death Metal got to gather together all the feelings that represent the essence of Metal music. Aggression, rebellion, the nothingness we all feel being alive in this sad and lonely and pathetic little planet, contempt for everything that is sacred, the sickness present in the decay and the putrid. Ok, Heavy Metal had all this, but let’s say that Death Metal escalated them and brought them to another level. The Death Metal level.

Vomitheist are the latest purveyors of sick, festering death metal that imbibe the best elements of the classic death metal bands and give the music a twisted interpretation of their own. They somehow manage to blend the HM-2 driven Swedish death metal sound with the ugly, slimey sound propagated by the likes of American bands such as Autopsy and make it work exceedingly well. Vomitheist take their time to flesh out their compositions, making the riffs punchy and nasty, and ensuring that they stick out rather than get lost in the miasma of cosmetic distortion. Their newest album “NekroFvneral” is the perfect expression of all this with moody cadences intertwined with lots of distortion and putrid vocals. My impression is that grand finale “Carnivorous Cult” puts all this into its own terms being the song that represents the better the band’s dark soul.

Lyricwise and musicwise “NekroFvneral” is the perfect expression of Old School Death Metal. Album gut opener “Strangled by Entrails” begins with a fast violent drumming assault that slows down a little to acquire a more mesmerizing cadence. Then the song goes bouncing between the mesmerizing cadence and the faster drumming. However, it’s not fair to say that the rest of the album follows this formula as “Epidemic Disembowelment” showcases the form the album is going to take until its end. “NekroFvneral” may be better defined as the slow torture that goes deep into the flesh tearing it little by little with some outbursts here and there. There are tracks, though, as “Horrific Bloodshed” and album tittle “NekroFvneral” that are Hardcore inspired to be fast and furious. “NekroFvneral” is a nice album for the ones that appreciate Death Metal at its best.
