Whispered – Metsutan – Songs of the Void

Whispered_-_Metsutan_Cover_Art  With the many, many, many different styles of metal that there are on the planet someone out there is bound to come with some new s**t that they think is the s**t. Sometimes it’s f**king terrible and a horrible idea (looking at you electronic metalcore), and other times it is a stroke of genius that nobody ever saw coming. Whispered have created the latter of the two with their one of a kind style that they call “samurai metal” which consists of melodic death metal mixed with folk elements with Eastern origins. That means you get a truly different sound that is as brutally intense as a battle of fierce warriors, and moments that are as serene and calm as a lily floating in the wind. The sheer contrast and union between these two drastically different styles meets at the perfect crossroad with Whispered’s third album “Metsutan – Songs of the Void”. Their first album, not bad. Second, f**king excellent in so many ways. “Metsutan”, an album that is so grand in scope and mastery of this unusual style of metal that it is hard to even begin to fathom without delving into the deep inner reaches of the record. The vicious vocals, stunning guitars, ridiculous bass, blasting drums, and mystical instruments all come together to create an experience that you will not, can not, and should not be ignored or taken lightly in the slightest way because “Metsutan” has such an indomitable presence and godly sound that no one can pass up. If you’ve ever wanted to see the vision of Chinese samurais fighting and their cultural background thrown into a style of music that captures that perfectly, then look no further than Whispered. They have such grace, such intensity, and such mastery over their craft that has come to its peak with “Metsutan – Songs of the Void” that even after listening to it time and again it is still un-f**king-believably epic. If you are looking for an ambitious album from an even more ambitious band the likes of which you’ve been searching for ever since 2016 started, and I can promise you that it’d be nigh impossible to find another of such high degree as with “Metsutan”.
