Why GOJIRA Won’t Play Full Albums Live, According To JOE DUPLANTIER

While some bands celebrate anniversaries by performing their classic albums from start to finish, GOJIRA has no plans to follow that path. The French metal powerhouse prefers to focus on crafting live shows that capture the intensity and spontaneity of their music, rather than recreating a studio experience note-for-note.

GOJIRA frontman Joe Duplantier recently spoke to Rolling Stone France about the band’s stance, emphasizing the difference between recorded music and live performance. “We already tried it in rehearsal, but it doesn’t work,” he said.

He elaborated on the unique experience of listening to an album: “For me, listening to an album is like lying on a bed, headphones on, following a story, with some crazy things happening.” Duplantier’s perspective highlights the challenge of translating a carefully crafted album into a live show without losing its essence. On the bright side, fans of From Mars to Sirius can still enjoy the band’s live-in-studio anniversary set as a special treat.

In addition to discussing live performances, Duplantier offered a glimpse into GOJIRA’s highly anticipated next album, reportedly slated for 2026. The band has been writing and recording while touring, thanks to their mobile studio setup: “We have a mobile studio, so we can also work on it while on tour. [The album is gradually taking shape and] we have some solid foundations and some tracks already have demos.”

He also acknowledged that creative disagreements within the band have led to new ideas and stronger material: “These are precious things, because it means the band’s message is becoming more refined.”

GOJIRA’s most recent studio release, Fortitude, arrived in April 2021 via Roadrunner Records. While fans may not hear a full-album set live anytime soon, Duplantier’s comments make it clear that the band is committed to delivering performances that capture the raw energy and spirit of their music.
