Why Was STEVE HARRIS’ Nephew Not Chosen As IRON MAIDEN’s New Drummer?

Steve Harris Live 2022

The recent announcement that Simon Dawson would be filling in for Nicko McBrain on IRON MAIDEN‘s upcoming tours has sparked controversy, particularly within the inner circle of band founder Steve Harris.

While Dawson, a seasoned drummer with a strong connection to the NWOBHM movement, is a qualified choice, many fans and family members were surprised that Joe Lazarus, Harris‘ nephew, wasn’t considered.

Steve Lazarus, Joe‘s father, expressed his disappointment publicly, highlighting his son’s qualifications and past opportunities. He questioned the decision, suggesting that Joe could seamlessly integrate into the band without extensive rehearsals.

When MAIDEN announced Dawson as their new drummer, Joe‘s father, Steve Lazarus, wrote in a comment section on MAIDEN‘s Facebook page: “Fair play. Let’s see what happens then. IMO, Joe could fit in without even a rehearsal. He knows the stuff inside out and backwards. He even played ‘The Trooper‘ with the band in rehearsals when he was 17. And they were amazed. Steve has even told Joe to learn the current set for the last 3 tours before this one in case Nicko was unable to play. So if there’s any evidence that he’s the right man for the job, then it’s all there. I have nothing against Simon at all. He’s a great drummer, but not sure he can play the songs the way Joe can.”

For many observers, Dawson’s selection may reflect IRON MAIDEN’s commitment to maintaining its core philosophy. Since its inception, the band has emphasized its British identity, and Dawson, a Suffolk native, embodies this cultural alignment. Additionally, his background fits seamlessly with the band’s musical ethos. Dawson’s age, comparable to the band members’, also contributes to on-stage visual and sonic cohesion.

Another key factor is Dawson’s direct experience with Harris. As the drummer for BRITISH LION, he has already proven his ability to meet the intensity and technical demands of MAIDEN’s sound. His professional maturity and stability may also have appealed to Harris, who values these traits in a band focused on longevity.

As Dawson prepares to take the stage with IRON MAIDEN, he faces the challenge of winning over fans and proving his worth. Meanwhile, Joe Lazarus remains a potential option for the band, should circumstances change.
