Wolfgang Van Halen was pleasantly surprised to discover that the online community doubted he played his guitar parts live at the two Taylor Hawkins tribute shows in London and Los Angeles this year. He views their disbelief as a compliment, which is why he playfully took some mean-spirited jabs back.
Justin Hawkins, the YouTube star and frontman of THE DARKNESS, served as a brilliant counterpart to Wolf Van Halen‘s playing during Taylor Hawkins‘ tribute shows. MAMMOTH WVH was easily the highlight of both performances!
Even though Wolf is adamant about not performing the VAN HALEN classics after Eddie‘s passing, he has made two prominent exceptions in honor of both his father and late FOO FIGHTERS drummer.
In both performances, Wolf displayed that he was unquestionably worthy of the legacy behind his surname. His precision and adeptness with the guitar were met with rave reviews from fans all over the world.
In a recent interview with Classic Rock, Wolf recounted his humbling experience of having the public proclaim that he “didn’t actually do it at all.” He admitted to feeling greatly honored by such remarks and added that some individuals even took their compliments “really far”.
“[Laughing] The most obvious response is to consider that an insult, but I take it as even more of a compliment,” he said. “You line up the solos, and there are times when I’m not even playing what’s on the [original VAN HALEN] record.
“Preparing for those shows was really tough, because it forced me to go back and look through those songs. I still wasn’t completely comfortable in doing that, emotionally speaking, so it took a lot.”
