Nova Doll – Denaturing Review

I would never picture a band like Nova Doll if I didn’t have the opportunity of listening to their “Denaturing” where each song is about death in a different respect – death of a person, death of innocence, death of relationships, or death of the seasons. Strong, isn’t it?

Well, believe me, Nova Doll’s music is as atring as their lyrical content. A sonancy that goes right to the 1990’s and bands like L7, just to quote the one I found to be near. What this really means is that their music is the hodgepodge of influences 1990’s bands were. In fact, there are two more important that is a mix of Black Sabbath with Punk Rock, not Hardcore, but Punk Rock. To some extent, “Denaturing” goes further with extremely low tuned guitars, slow drumming and a very shoegazed mood. The difference here that pops up is the leads in almost all songs what was not the standard for 1990’s bands. Tracks like “Mabon” sound heavier than hell the way Nova Doll do it. There is some kind of musical naivety in the instrumentals that I like very much. It’s something early Punk Rock bands used to have. But the low tuned guitars is pretty Metal. The combination of both is really explosive. And believe me “Dead Before I Knew It” has even lower guitars. It’s the track that sounds more as L7.

“Denaturing” may sound as a nightmare if one realizes “Denaturation” explores the biological and chemical breakdown of the body during the dying process. Pretty Metal. With Punk Rock features. Plus other influences. So, an album to listen and discover.

Nova Doll “Denaturing” will be released on September 29th via Black Throne Productions/Tarantula Tapes.
