METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett has confirmed that the band incorporated a reference to the theme of the 1960s Batman TV show in one of their riffs. This reference can be found in the song “Shadows Follow” from their album 72 Seasons.
The riff, nicknamed “The Batman Riff,” can be heard around the four-minute and 20-second mark of the song.
During a recent interview with Total Guitar, Kirk Hammett openly acknowledged the reference when questioned about it.
He said: “That’s really funny, because we called that riff ‘The Batman Riff’, and I know exactly what you are talking about.”
Fans had speculated about this reference, and there is even a subreddit dedicated to discussing it, where fan asked “Anyone else here [sic] the 60s Batman theme song in ‘Shadows Follow’?”
“Yes! I immediately heard it and it honestly took me out of the song for a second,” said one reply.
Another one wrote: “Man, I laughed my a*s off at that part the first time I listened to the song,” wrote another. “Great track overall.”
METALLICA is currently promoting their album 72 Seasons and will be embarking on their M72 world tour in Europe starting in May 2024.
