ACE FREHLEY Says He Expects Payment For ‘Spaceman’ Makeup Used By KISS Avatars

Ace Frehley Live

In a new interview with Ultimate Guitar, original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley says he believes that he will be compensated for the use of his “Spaceman” makeup in the KISS avatars.

“I get paid for the usage — for merch and stuff. And I would consider this avatar stuff a merchandise ploy,” he said. “But I just saw something the other day on YouTube that Gene [Simmons] is having second thoughts about the whole avatar thing. But who knows with those guys — every day is a different story with those guys. And to be totally honest with you, I really don’t follow what they do very closely — because I’m more involved with my own career.”

Every individual in KISS took charge of creating their unique makeup style. When drummer Peter Criss departed, he gave up the rights to his “Catman” persona. On the other hand, Ace Frehley asserts that he licensed his makeup. In 2014, Frehley stated that he would soon regain the rights, a statement dismissed by Stanley as a “fantasy”. Stanley responded to Frehley‘s remarks in March 2014, tweeting, “We own it. He sold it.”

After touring for 50 years, KISS played their final show in Madison Square Garden on December 2nd, 2023. However, this doesn’t mean the end for the band. KISS will be transforming into digital avatars, created by Industrial Light & Magic, allowing them to continue performing and pushing the boundaries of rock and roll. This new era is a partnership with Pophouse Entertainment Group and will include immersive avatar-powered music concerts.

The band members are excited about the opportunity to immortalize KISS and take their brand to new heights. Alongside the avatar shows, KISS will also continue with other ventures such as a KISS museum, cruises, a movie, and a cartoon show.
