David Lee Roth has shared a lesser-known track by a band named the FUGLEES on his YouTube channel, appearing to use it as a subtle dig at Sammy Hagar.
The ongoing rivalry between Roth and Hagar is evident, with both having criticized each other’s performances while leading VAN HALEN. Hagar is set to perform Van Halen classics during the upcoming Best Of All Worlds tour.
The song featured on David Lee Roth’s YouTube channel under the title “Where Is David Lee Roth Directors Cut,” appears to have been reposted without attribution. It appears Roth selected this particular song for its lyrics: “Sammy Hagar’s not the same / You can drop that singer from EXTREME / But no matter where you walk around / There’s a little David, everyone.”
The meaning behind these lyrics isn’t entirely transparent, but it seems evident that he’s making subtle criticisms aimed at both Hagar and Gary Cherone, the former frontman of EXTREME who briefly sang for VAN HALEN from 1996 to 1999.
Hagar had previously expressed that Roth was “welcome” to join the group. In a response obtained exclusively by Van Halen News Desk, Roth simply stated, “Let’s do this”.
However, Hagar later said that Roth is not included in the entire “Best Of All Worlds” tour. While Hagar initially extended an invitation to Roth, he has clarified that Roth will only be permitted to perform one or two songs, rather than participate in the entire tour.
