Hellset – Global Warning Review

My dear child of the night knows that I never complain about Thrash Metal being predictable. No, never wrote a line about that. Nor did I write that Thrash Metal bands should/could be a step ahead because many of them are stuck in the good old 1980’s. No, no. Never. Here’s Hellset with “Global Warming” to prove me right. The tittle says much as one of the most updated theme that has ever poped up here. Global warming is the current trend for obvious reasons. Regarding to the sound, the same can be said about “Global Warming” which is also pretty updated, to some extent, of course.

Hellset put together here a hell of cauldron of influences from the 1980’s, going through the 1990’s to finally reach the modern days. It’s impossible to say “Global Warming” doesn’t sound modern. Of course, this means the album doesn’t have the traditional Thrash Metal sonancy. Thanks to that. The first thing that contrasts is Jan ‘Beliar’ Hawajski’s voice which goes pretty near the sound of the immortal Tim Baker from one of the most unsung bands of the world Cirith Ungol. There are times I feel some Overkill; other times I feeel some Testament both bands that can’t be said to be part of the traditional sound of Thrash Metal. “Flying Beggars” and “In Hora Mortis” are on the second. By the way, “In Hora Mortis” is one the most interesting track I’ve heard here in a while. Its unique combination of experimentalism and some kind of what is normally called Thrash Metal hits the fan hard. Pay close attention to the speed variation Hellset impress to the song. Following track “Revenge” is on the same page. Everything changes with “Blindfolded” which brings some Overkill influence. On the other, “Darkness” is pure Cirith Ungol.

“Global Warming” is a pretty unique album with an intense approach. The kind of album that will bring some new information to fans. Not groundbreaking, but one step ahead, if you know what I mean. Fresh. Bold. Innovative. Charimatic.

Hellset “Global Warming” was released in 2023.
