METALLICA To Embark On Summer Tour With Electric And Hydrogen-Powered Trucks

METALLICA and Iveco have formed an unexpected alliance, resulting in a fleet of heavy-duty trucks powered by batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. These trucks are set to embark on the European leg of METALLICA‘s M72 World Tour this summer, as reported by Jalopnik. This collaboration between the Italian heavy truck manufacturer and the American heavy metal band commenced last year, marked by the unveiling of specially designed truck liveries for the tour, as highlighted by Cool Down.

The trucks responsible for transporting METALLICA‘s equipment across Europe represent a blend of battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell models, according to Semafor. This move positions METALLICA as one of the earliest adopters and most prominent advocates of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). It appears that METALLICA‘s commitment to reducing carbon emissions aligns with its disdain for file-sharing.

According to Semafor, a portion of METALLICA‘s musical instruments will be transported in trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells during their European tour this summer. Gerrit Marx, CEO of Iveco Group, emphasized the band’s dedication to minimizing the carbon footprint of their tours. Marx stated that Iveco is crafting custom low-carbon trucks for the tour to foster sustainability in every city where METALLICA performs.

The collaboration with Iveco positions METALLICA as a proponent of hydrogen, a contentious fuel source that holds potential significance in the transition to clean energy. Despite the current predominance of fossil fuels in hydrogen production, Marx and other hydrogen investors, speaking at Baker Hughes‘ annual meeting in Florence, Italy, are optimistic about hydrogen’s green future. They advocate for expanding the industry by targeting diverse end users, ranging from industrial plants to entertainment groups like METALLICA, with the expectation that advancements in renewable energy and carbon capture technology will render hydrogen a viable climate solution.

Iveco will supply METALLICA with a variety of truck models for their tour, including the EV variant of the S-Way truck known as the S-eWay, along with trucks running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). While the LNG trucks offer extended range compared to EV and FCEV models, they are not as environmentally friendly. The S-eWay trucks boast a range of up to 500 kilometers (311 miles), while the S-Way LNG trucks can travel up to 1,600 kilometers (994 miles).
