Above Aurora – Myriad Woes Review

There are many kinds of epic around Metal music. Above Aurora prove that with the eleven-minute grand opening track “Inner Whispers” from their third full-length “Myriad Woes,” which is a blend of many Extreme Metal influences with a deceptive spirit in it. By deceptive, I mean, at first, most tracks don’t sound like Metal due to the myriad of sounds the band put in their music. It seems to me, to some extent, Rush are present in most tracks due to the complex instrumental used. Alright, it’s okay most of the sonancies delivered here have the taste of Post-Black Metal things, but, I felt lots of Rush here. Well, music can’t be explained logically as some kind of hard science.

As aforementioned, album warmer “Inner Whispers” delivers what the tittle tells. Yeah, really, the song sounds as someone whispering. Notwithstanding the real whispers coming from a girl in the beginning of it. The guitar strumming plus the whispering might sound a bit as Metallica’s “One.” but longer and harder. Above Aurora‘s guitars use a lot the repeating technique making a mesmerizing sound. It’s true that in eleven minutes many things change in the song. Fun fact is that there are no real vocals, only the girl’s whispers and other white noises and sounds. It’s an idea some bands are using a lot giving their songs an aura of mystique. From then on “Myriad Woes” changes a lot. Following track “Sparks” starts with lots of rage and goes in speed crescendo until the middle when a clean acoustic guitar emulates some Spanish guitars with a Black Metal wrapping. I must say the effect is great. Maybe the track that goes in the most different direction of the album. Of course, it’s the heaviest and fastest. “Efforts to Fail” is more of vocals with an eeire and strong voice that haunts all the tracks. There are really fast Old School Black Metal moments wrapped with lots of effects from the guitars or other instruments.

“Inner Whispers” is an album for black metallers who are aware of the style’s most cutting edge sounds with a foot on Progressive Black Metal for the Rush spirit I got here.
