Coven Japan – Earthlings Review

For years long I’ve been following the academic discussion about the possibility of time travel. The possibility of a time machine has been exhaustedly discussed – and put in action so to say – around science fiction literature and its spin-offs as movies and shows. In short, time travel is both possible and not possible. It depends on where – the final destination – one looks. If it is to the future, we’re already doing it. No, really. To travel to the future is theoretically possible. The same doesn’t happen to travel back in time. Everywhere I looked the answer was a sound no. However, in terms of music, to travel back to the past is definitely possible thanks to bands as Coven Japan and albums as “Earthlings.”

Yeah, that’s right I’ve reviewed other albums that could revive the 1980’s Metal music as precise as “Earthlings,” but the pristine job Coven Japan did here deserves all the credits. 1980’s Metal spirit and soul are definitely here in each note and each drum beat. The secret is not only the tones, but also the way songs were written and the techniques used. Of course, a band can create music using 1980’s Metal spirit with Modern techniques. We’ve reviewed many of them around the years. The outcome is really great. However, a perfect job is only done following the same rules bands used to follow back then. No more, no less. Coven Japan did it. Moreover, they added influences like 1970’s Scorpions as in “To Sanctuary – March For The Voiceless,” such a rare influence that makes the album recreation much more valid. By the way, just loved the tittle. Tittle track “Earthlings” has the same feeling. Yeah, Scorpions were a big influence back then.

Don’t get surprise if you don’t understand a single word from the songs even though they have tittles in English. They are in Japanese and only the choruses are in English. The band’s own words is that Coven Japan believe that singing along together is one of the best parts of heavy metal, so chorus parts are written in English as the world’s common language for sing-alongs together in the world. Well, the band did deliver what they promised. “Earthlings” is here to prove it.

Coven Japan “Earthlings” will be released on November 23rd via No Remorse Records.
