Defryme – Starkiller Review

There is a lot of things I write here that my dear children of the night are used to. One of them is that I say some albums are like a time travel. For one reason or another, some albums have the power to take you far away from our time. There are albums that are the real deal, I mean, they’re from the time they take you to. For unknown reasons – or not – they weren’t released back them. Other albums are a homage to the good old times the band decided to honor. Defryme with their EP “Starkiller” is the first. In fact, it features alternative versions of some of their most beloved tracks from their 1994 breakthrough album, “Purekiller,” originally recorded and produced at Hothouse Audio in 1993.

Ok, then, by the date 1993, my dear child of the night might get real suspicious of what kind of sonancy “Starkiller” might have. Yes, it’s the so called grunge – a term that I have never totally got it right. I really try  to avoid it due to the bad blood it brings. From where I’m standing, it refers to bands that used to make a mix of Black Sabbath with some Punk Rock with a doomy cadence. Does this vary? Well, I guess so. Album opener “Sweeter Shelter” proves that to me with a sweet guitar strumming that goes in an interesting crescendo. Out of it there is the grand finale “Purekiller” with the spirit of Faith No More’s “Epic,” a song that took Metal world by assault. Back then we used to call this Funk O’Metal, or by the term used today Groove Metal which is far more comprehensive. I guess both tracks make the album worth the time to listen to it. The guitar riffs are really worth the while mixed with some space echoes from the 1970’s. I wonder why Defryme didn’t follow this direction.

“Starkiller” is a pure gem from the 1990’s, an epoch when Metal got crazy and many crazy things happened. Faith No More for instance. This album may reveal to my present fans how music was back then.

Defryme “Starkiller” was released on March 04th via Golden Robot Records.
