Félonie – De Sève et de Sang Review

Félonie are a Black Metal one-man band hailing from the Alps. It is the side-project of Marc Bourban, a member of the bands Wizards of Wiznan and Tyrmfar. This journey, which began in the heart of winter 2022, draws inspiration from local history, tales, and legends.

Marc Bourban himself comments:

“This album, titled ‘Of Sap and Blood’ (De Sève et de Sang), is my contribution to the history of my homeland. I have been active in the music scene for many years, playing in various bands ranging from folk rock to death and black metal. This time, I wanted to release an album composed and recorded without any compromises. An idea, as park, and I pressed the record button. This debut album delves into ancient times in Valais, from the story of The Battle of Octodurus in 57 BC to the tales and legends that shaped my childhood.” 

“De Sève et de Sang” commences the best way possible with a small moody intro to then, in a sudden, blast into some fierce guitars and pounding drums. It’s Félonie telling once and for all what the purpose of the music is. “Sedunum Invictus” is the pure spirit of modern Black Metal with the intricate musicality bands apply now to their music. The guitars are a real highlight with their imposing blasts that bend the forces to impose their power. Following track “Ce que c’est que La Mort” commences even more moody with a medieval flute giving the track a gentle and sweet intro that goes in a crescendo to blast into some powerful guitars. It’s the track that makes a lot of difference in the album for the change of heart that give it some kind of Symphonic Metal spirit.

In general, the mood of “De Sève et de Sang” is a hard Modern Black Metal with all the intricate and careful songwriting. The album sounds to have been carefully crafted in order to achieve the best results ever. It’s the impression tracks as “Le Garde de Fer” give the fan. Each change of tempo and cadence sounds to have been carefully thought. Some call it professionalism. I call it passion for Metal.
