Fessus – Pilgrims of Morbidity / Thresholds of Morbidity Review

Fessus with “Pilgrims of Morbidity / Thresholds of Morbidity” are just the kind of Doom Metal I like, the more evil the best. The slower the guitar riffings even better. Maybe it’s me, but I have alwyas associated Doom Metal with Black Metal regarding to the evil spirit they pass the fan. I guess Doom Metal sounds evil more evil than Black Metal due to the slow and shoegazed riffings and cadences. Giving second thoughts on it, “Pilgrims of Morbidity / Thresholds of Morbidity” can be considered a slower Black Metal album, if you know what I mean. It’s everything here except for the speed. Fun fact about “Pilgrims of Morbidity / Thresholds of Morbidity” is that “Pilgrims of Morbidity” is in fact the debut demo and “Thresholds of Morbidity” is the addition of some live bonustracks to the CD version. It’s the first time I get an album like this with two tittles, but meaning only one, if you get me right.

The album commences with the evil charming “Acidic Secretion” and its Pantera’s “Cemetery Gates” guitar riff spirit. The fan who knows it might get puzzled. The slow guitar riffing makes it even more diabolic. I guess that the slow and cadenced spirit of the song is what makes it so intense and so catchy at the same time. The carried away effect guitarists Brenton and Gumpf give to it adds another layer of coolness making it even more likeable to the ones initiated to the black arts of sound. Album tittle “Pilgrims of Morbidity” is a little faster, but not faster enought to give away the spirit of evil it carries. The guitar riff is a little more mundane when compared to “Acidic Secretion.” My dear child of the night might find the guitar leads a little strange as they are as alow as the song and use some effects. Well, I kind of find them right. “Unmoored” follows the same idea tittle track delivers such as the slow cadence with an extra heavy coat of drumming.

“Thresholds of Morbidity” is the addition of some live bonustracks to the CD version as I said before and I must say they are even more mobid versions of the ones recorded. The guitar squeaks in “Acidic Secretion” sound even more the ones regarding to Pantera’s “Cemetery Gates.” There are two new songs. One is “Pointless Anguish” and the other is “Asphyxiate in Exile.”
